The 2016 NRL season was a landmark year for the Cronulla-Sutherland Sharks, culminating in their first-ever premiership title after 50 years in the competition. Under the guidance of head coach Shane Flanagan and the leadership of captain Paul Gallen, the Sharks showcased resilience and skill throughout the season.
Regular Season Performance:
The Sharks commenced their 2016 campaign with a 20–14 loss to the North Queensland Cowboys. However, they quickly found form, securing a 30–2 victory over the St. George Illawarra Dragons in Round 2. A pivotal moment came between Rounds 4 and 21, where the Sharks achieved a club-record 15 consecutive wins, including a commanding 62–0 triumph over the Newcastle Knights. This winning streak propelled them to the top of the ladder. Despite a slight dip in form towards the end of the regular season, with only one win in their last five games, the Sharks finished 3rd on the ladder, setting the stage for a strong finals campaign.
2016 Squad:
The Sharks' success was built on a cohesive and talented squad. Key players included:
Ben Barba (Fullback): Instrumental in attack, providing flair and creativity from the back.
Sosaia Feki (Winger): Consistent try-scorer, finishing many of the team's attacking moves.
Jack Bird (Centre): Dynamic in both attack and defence, offering versatility.
James Maloney (Five-Eighth): Reliable playmaker and goal-kicker, contributing significantly to the team's points tally.
Chad Townsend (Halfback): Provided strategic direction and effective game management.
Andrew Fifita (Prop): Dominant forward, known for his powerful runs and offloads.
Michael Ennis (Hooker): The experienced hooker who directed the play around the ruck.
Luke Lewis (Second Row): Veteran presence, delivering crucial performances in key moments.
Paul Gallen (Lock/Captain): The heart and soul of the team, leading by example with his work rate and determination.
Finals Series:
In the qualifying final, the Sharks faced the Canberra Raiders at GIO Stadium. Despite the Raiders' 10-game winning streak and the absence of captain Paul Gallen due to a back injury, the Sharks secured a 16–14 victory, earning a week off and a spot in the preliminary final.
In the preliminary final, they met the North Queensland Cowboys at the Sydney Football Stadium. The Sharks delivered a commanding performance, winning 32–20 and advancing to the grand final.
Grand Final Details:
The 2016 NRL Grand Final was held on October 2 at Sydney's ANZ Stadium, with 83,625 spectators in attendance. The Sharks faced the Melbourne Storm in a tightly contested match. Cronulla led 8–0 at halftime, courtesy of a try from Ben Barba and goals from James Maloney. The Storm fought back in the second half, taking a 12–8 lead. However, a decisive try by Andrew Fifita, converted by Maloney, secured a 14–12 victory for the Sharks. Luke Lewis was awarded the Clive Churchill Medal for his outstanding performance.
