​​​​​​​HISTORY - The Scarlets rugby union team is a professional rugby team based in Llanelli, Wales. The team was originally formed in 2003 as a result of the merger of two existing Welsh rugby union teams, Llanelli RFC and the Welsh Rugby Union owned club, the Llanelli Warriors.

Llanelli RFC was a well-known and established rugby union club, having been founded in 1875. The club had a long and illustrious history, having won the Welsh Cup 14 times and the unofficial Welsh championship on 11 occasions. The club also produced a number of great Welsh players over the years, including Barry John, Delme Thomas, Phil Bennett, and Jonathan Davies.

The Llanelli Warriors were a relatively new team, having been founded in 2000 as part of the Welsh Rugby Union's plan to develop regional rugby in Wales. The Warriors were one of five regional teams established by the Welsh Rugby Union, and were based in Llanelli.

The Scarlets, as the newly merged team was known, played their first match in August 2003 against the Celtic Warriors, another of the Welsh Rugby Union's regional teams. The Scarlets won the match 38-24, with Welsh international Stephen Jones scoring 18 points.

Since then, the Scarlets have become one of the most successful rugby union teams in Wales. They have won the Pro12 (now Pro14) competition three times, in 2004, 2017, and 2018. They have also reached the final of the European Rugby Champions Cup on two occasions, in 2007 and 2018, but were defeated both times.

The Scarlets have produced a number of great players over the years, including Stephen Jones, Dwayne Peel, Ken Owens, and Jonathan Davies.
