HISTORY - Sale Rugby Union Club, commonly known as Sale Sharks, is a professional rugby union team based in Manchester, England. The club was founded in 1861 as Sale Football Club and was originally a football (soccer) team. It wasn't until 1959 that the club began playing rugby union.
Sale Sharks have a rich history in English rugby, having won the Premiership Rugby (formerly the English Premiership) once, in the 2005-2006 season, and finishing as runners-up on two other occasions. They have also won the European Challenge Cup twice, in 2002 and 2005.
Throughout the 1970s and 1980s, Sale Sharks were a successful team in the lower divisions of English rugby. In the 1990s, they were promoted to the top division, where they have remained ever since. The club was purchased by Brian Kennedy in 1999, and he invested heavily in the club, helping to transform Sale Sharks into one of the top rugby union teams in the country.
Sale Sharks have been known for their strong player recruitment, and have signed a number of high-profile international players over the years, including Jason Robinson, Mark Cueto, Charlie Hodgson, and Danny Cipriani.
In recent years, Sale Sharks have moved to the AJ Bell Stadium, a purpose-built rugby stadium in Salford, Greater Manchester. The club has also expanded its commercial operations, with the establishment of a rugby academy and the acquisition of the Salford City Stadium, which has been used for concerts and other events.
Today, Sale Sharks continue to be one of the top rugby union teams in England, with a strong squad of players and a dedicated fan base.
