The University of Canberra Brumbies were named Cup winners and Champions of the World Club Sevens in London overnight after downing Auckland 17-14 in the final.

After falling to Auckland in the pool rounds on Saturday, the University of Canberra Brumbies managed to finish the rest of the tournament without a loss eventually squaring the ledger against the Kiwi team in the final.

Player of the tournament, Henry Speight, scored a bucket load of tries during the two-day tournament while the rest of the side showed no weak links as they surged towards the final.

A six-man side turned on some class to win in golden point against Moscow in the Quarter Final while a big win against Buenos Aires, 26-7, ushered the University of Canberra Brumbies into the final.

Captain Robbie Coleman said the win was a great way to end a successful year of rugby in the Australian Capital.

“Throughout the tournament I think this side has shown we were here to win. I’m very proud of this group for the way they have stuck it out when things got tough,” Coleman said.

“Beating Moscow with six men, knocking over the top seeds Buenos Aires and then bouncing back against Auckland all showed plenty of heart.

“Henry Speight is a special player at 15-a-side rugby and he’s just shown his versatility here by dominating the sevens. It was nice for us to have some Fijian influence come through in the way we played.

“Great to bring some silverware back to Canberra and finish the season on such high.”
