HISTORY OF SCOTLAND RUGBY - The history of Scottish rugby union can be traced back to the mid-19th century, when the game was introduced to the country by English and Irish students studying at Scottish universities. The first recorded rugby match in Scotland took place in 1857, between Edinburgh Academicals and Glasgow Academicals.
The Scottish Rugby Union (SRU) was formed in 1873, and Scotland played its first international match against England in the same year. Scotland won that first match, and went on to become one of the leading rugby nations in the world.
In the early years of international rugby, Scotland was one of the dominant teams, winning 11 Five Nations titles (the predecessor to the Six Nations Championship) between 1883 and 1999. The team also won the Grand Slam (winning all of its matches in the tournament) on three occasions, in 1925, 1984, and 1990.
In 1987, Scotland participated in the inaugural Rugby World Cup, reaching the semi-finals before losing to France. The team has since qualified for every World Cup, with its best performance being a fourth-place finish in 1991.
In recent years, Scotland has remained a competitive force in international rugby, finishing in the top three of the Six Nations on several occasions. The team's most recent Six Nations title came in 2015.
Some of the greatest Scottish rugby players of all time include Gavin Hastings, Finlay Calder, Jim Telfer, Andy Irvine, and Gregor Townsend.
