HISTORY - The Portugal national rugby union team has a relatively short history, having played their first international match in 1935 against Spain. However, the team has made significant strides in recent years and has become a competitive force in European rugby.
In the early years, Portugal struggled to establish themselves on the international rugby scene. They were largely considered to be a minor team and struggled to compete against the more established rugby nations. Portugal did not qualify for the Rugby World Cup until 2007, where they failed to make it past the pool stage.
Despite these early struggles, Portugal continued to work on their rugby development and made significant progress in the 1990s and early 2000s. They won their first international match against Italy in 1995 and finished second in the European Nations Cup in 2003.
In 2007, Portugal made their debut in the Rugby World Cup, where they faced tough competition from New Zealand, Scotland, Italy, and Romania in their pool. Despite failing to advance, the team gained valuable experience and exposure on the international stage.
In recent years, Portugal has continued to develop their rugby program and has become a regular participant in the Rugby Europe Championship. They have also had success in the World Rugby Sevens Series, finishing in the top 10 in the 2018-2019 season.
Overall, while Portugal may not be considered a major rugby nation, they have made significant progress in recent years and have established themselves as a competitive team on the European rugby scene.
