HISTORY

The British and Irish Lions is a rugby union team made up of players from England, Scotland, Wales, and Ireland. The team was formed in 1888, and its first tour was to Australia and New Zealand in 1888.

Since then, the Lions have toured almost every rugby-playing nation in the world, including South Africa, Australia, New Zealand, and Argentina. The Lions play a series of test matches against the host nation, as well as midweek matches against regional and provincial teams.

The Lions have had a mixed history, with some successful tours and some less successful ones. Some of the most famous tours include the 1971 tour of New Zealand, in which the Lions won the test series for the first time, and the 1997 tour of South Africa, in which the Lions won the test series 2-1.

The Lions have also had some notable players over the years, including Welsh fly-half Barry John, Scottish scrum-half Gavin Hastings, Irish fly-half Ronan O'Gara, and English winger Jason Robinson. The Lions are currently coached by Warren Gatland, who led them to a series win over Australia in 2013 and a drawn series against New Zealand in 2017.
