HISTORY - Wasps Rugby Football Club was an English professional rugby union team that was founded in 1867 in London, England. The club is one of the oldest and most successful rugby clubs in England, with a long and illustrious history in the sport.
In the early days, Wasps played on the open space of Eton College, and their team was made up of former students of the school. In 1877, the club moved to Sudbury, and in 1923, they moved to Acton. They were based there until 2002, when they moved to their current home, the Ricoh Arena in Coventry.
The early years of Wasps were marked by a string of successes, with the team winning the Middlesex Sevens tournament in 1924, and reaching the final of the RFU Intermediate Cup in 1928. The club continued to grow throughout the 20th century, and in the 1970s, they established themselves as one of the top teams in English rugby.
In 1980, Wasps won the John Player Cup, which was the first major trophy in the club's history. This was followed by several successful seasons, and in 1990, they won the Courage League, which was the top domestic competition in English rugby at the time.
The 1990s were a particularly successful period for Wasps, as they won the league title three more times, as well as the Heineken Cup twice. The team was also a regular feature in the playoffs of the English Premiership, which was introduced in 1997.
In the early 2000s, Wasps continued their success, winning the Premiership three times in a row between 2003 and 2005. They also won the Heineken Cup for a third time in 2007, becoming the first English team to win the competition three times.
Since then, Wasps have continued to be one of the top teams in English rugby, regularly qualifying for the playoffs of the Premiership and the Champions Cup. In recent years, the team has been led by a number of star players, including Lawrence Dallaglio, Joe Launchbury, and Elliot Daly.
