"International rugby's trio of Test centurions were today named the inaugural winners of the All Party Parliamentary Rugby Union Awards.

England's veteran prop Jason Leonard, Wallaby great David Campese and Frenchman Philippe Sella are the only players to have accumulated over 100 caps and they will be presented with their commemorative medals at the Palace of Westminster tonight.

The award has been created by the All Party Rugby Union Group of the UK Parliament to recognise `outstanding achievement in the game, by any individual from any country, who has excelled in any capacity related to the sport'.

The awards are the first of their kind to be given to any sport by any All Party Parliamentary Committee and Derek Wyatt, the MP for Sittingbourne and Sheppey and chairman of the group, admitted all three players richly deserved the honour.

``If there was a Knighthood, an Oscar or a Nobel Prize for rugby, then Jason, David and Philippe would have received it by now,'' said Wyatt, himself a former England international.

``To have attained 100 caps and more is an unique and extraordinary achievement by three unique and extraordinary sportsmen.

``They have brought immense credit to themselves and rugby union by being great players and great guys. We are delighted that they have accepted theawards.''

Front row forward Leonard, who has won 106 caps for England and five for the British Lions, is 35 but age will not prevent him from competing in his fourth World Cup after claiming a place in Clive Woodward's squad for Australia.

The former carpenter from Barking has captained England twice, scoring one international try, and despite all his achievements in the sport he revealed this latest award was ``humbling''.

``Rugby is always evolving, it never stands still so it's a great honour that anyone would deem us worthy of this award,'' he said.

``It's very humbling. Although my reasons for playing rugby my have changed, I still love it as much as ever.''

Campese, the world's leading international try-scorer with 64 touch downs from 101 Tests, added: ``It's a fantastic achievement for the three of us. Rugby is a great game.

``I became a Wallaby at 19 and travelled the world to see places like England and South Africa that I'd only ever heard of. The experiences have been brilliant.

``I'm pleased because these awards demonstrate that while everyone is looking ahead to the World Cup and the future of the sport, people appreciate the achievements of players from previous years.''

Sella was also delighted with the recognition of the All Party Parliamentary Rugby Union Group and revealed there was a strong camaraderie between himself,Leonard and Campese on account of their membership of an exclusive group.

``I was very surprised when I head about these awards - although it was a pleasant surprise,'' said the former centre, who represented France 111 times between 1982 and 1995.

``To go to the House of Commons is very special for me, especially with Campo and Jason, my team-mates from the club of 100 caps.

``It is a privilege to be in their company - we are friends and not just rugby players, which is very important to me.''

Wyatt said that no-one has been knighted for services to rugby union but revealed that he had nominated four former players - one from each home union - to receive the honour."
