Extract below taken from the History of Lane Walker Rudkin, the company that developed Canterbury Apparel, and of the Temex range of rugby jerseys.

"In 1996, a new development was introduced that would revolutionise fabric production.

It was called Temex, and came about after Textiles MD Mike Wilson went to the ITMA exhibition to find a new way of knitting football jerseys, one that would save significant production time.

Temex is a highly technical production method that enables fabric with different qualities - keeping players cool, when it's hot and warm when it's cold, plus special moisture-absorption qualities and added strength or grip - to be computer-generated for different zones of the garment.

Different technical yarns are used, and the pre-programmed machine knits them into the fabric in the different zones.

That product became the cutting edge that only the top teams could afford to wear,' Mike Wilson said. The special fibres encourage wicking (or transfer) of moisture away from the skin surface to the outer layer, where it evaporates.

When the full-time whistle blows, the player's skin surface is drier and rapid cool-down is minimised because the fabric dries five times faster than other jerseys.

At first, Temex was offered only to Canterbury's premium sponsored teams, such as the Super 12 sides, but in 2000 it was made available to all rugby teams."
