HISTORY - Rugby union in Argentina has a long and rich history, dating back to the late 19th century. The first recorded game of rugby in Argentina was played in 1873, between British residents in Buenos Aires. The first rugby union club in Argentina, the Buenos Aires Football Club, was founded in 1867.
The early years of Argentine rugby were dominated by British expatriates, who formed the majority of the country's players and clubs. However, over time, more and more Argentines began to take up the sport, and by the early 20th century, there were several Argentine-only clubs in the country.
The Argentine Rugby Union (UAR) was founded in 1899, and the first national team was selected in 1910. Argentina played its first international match in 1910, against a touring British Isles team, and won 28-3. The team continued to play regularly against touring sides, but it wasn't until the 1960s that Argentina began to compete regularly in international competitions.
In 1965, Argentina played its first match against a major rugby nation, losing to Australia 19-11. Over the following decades, the Argentine national team, known as the Pumas, established themselves as a formidable force in world rugby. They competed in every Rugby World Cup tournament from 1987 to 2019, reaching the semi-finals in 2007 and finishing third in 2007 and 2015.
