HISTORY - Carlisle Rugby League Football Club, also known as the Carlisle City RLFC, was a professional rugby league team based in Carlisle, Cumbria, England. The club was founded in 1981 and played their home games at the Brunton Park stadium, which they shared with Carlisle United Football Club.
The early years of Carlisle rugby league were marked by limited success on the field, as the team struggled to compete against more established clubs in the lower tiers of English rugby league. However, the club's fortunes began to improve in the late 1980s and early 1990s, as they rose through the ranks of the rugby league pyramid and gained promotion to the second division of the Rugby League Championship.
In the 1994/95 season, Carlisle City RLFC finished in third place in the second division, narrowly missing out on promotion to the top flight of English rugby league. However, the following season saw the team struggle, and they were eventually relegated back to the third division.
Despite their relegation, Carlisle continued to be a competitive team in the lower tiers of English rugby league, and in 1997 they reached the final of the Regal Trophy, one of the major knockout competitions in the sport. Unfortunately, they were defeated 60-14 by the Sheffield Eagles in the final.
The early 2000s saw a decline in the fortunes of Carlisle rugby league, as financial difficulties and off-field problems began to take their toll. The team was eventually forced to withdraw from the Rugby League Conference in 2003, and they were formally disbanded in 2004.
